Ponds are the project people research the longest and understand the least, and the reason is that almost nobody publishes a number. A pond is not priced by the acre the way a driveway is priced by the foot, because two ponds the same size on two properties four miles apart can differ by a factor of three depending on what is under them. What follows are honest Indiana ranges, what actually moves them, and the plain answer to the question most people are really asking, which is whether the pond they already have can be saved. Every property is quoted individually and every quote here is free.
Most farm and residential ponds in this state land somewhere between 8,000 and 45,000 dollars, and the spread inside that range is almost entirely about dirt volume and what you do with it. A small quarter-acre recreational pond on good clay ground, where the spoil can be spread on site, sits at the low end. A one-acre pond with a proper core trench, a shaped spillway and a dam built to hold sits in the middle. Anything requiring imported clay, a liner, long haul distances for the spoil, or work around utilities and access problems moves up from there and can pass 60,000 dollars. The single biggest lever is whether the excavated material stays on the property. Dirt that gets spread and shaped nearby is nearly free to move. Dirt that has to be trucked off is priced by the load, every load, both directions.
This is the question to settle before anyone talks about price, and in Indiana the answer changes county to county and sometimes field to field. Central Indiana till plain clay generally seals well on its own, which is why farm ponds dot every township from Boone County east. Moraine clay through the middle of Porter and Lake counties holds water beautifully. But the lakeshore sand in the north and the Kankakee outwash plain in the northwest are ninety percent sand and will not hold water at all without help. On that ground a pond is either dug down to meet the water table, which is the honest and usually cheaper answer, or built with a compacted clay key or a liner, which is not. A soil test pit costs very little compared to a pond that drains itself every August, and we would rather dig one than guess.
A leaking pond is more common than a new one and it is usually cheaper than people fear, provided the diagnosis is right. Most repairs land between 3,500 and 18,000 dollars. The failure is almost never the whole pond. It is a specific thing: a seep along the dam, a tree root that died and left a channel, a rusted or crushed overflow pipe letting water out below the surface, a bank that has been pugged by cattle until it will not hold, or a core trench that was never properly cut when the pond was built. The diagnosis is most of the value here, because sealing an entire pond bottom when the actual leak is a failed overflow pipe means spending twenty thousand dollars to avoid spending four. Bring us photos taken during a dry spell and during a wet one, and the difference between them usually tells the story.
If your spillway is eroding or your overflow structure is caving in, that is the repair that should not wait for spring, and it is worth saying plainly because people do wait. A spillway is the pressure relief valve on a dam. When it undercuts, every heavy rain enlarges the failure, and the progression from a washed channel to a breached dam is faster than most owners expect. Rebuilding a spillway generally runs 4,000 to 20,000 dollars depending on the length of the structure, whether armor stone is needed, and how much of the surrounding grade has to be reshaped to bring water into it correctly. Emergency spillway work after a partial failure costs more than planned work before one, which is the usual arithmetic. A pond that has held for forty years can be lost in one storm through a spillway nobody looked at.
Ponds fill up. Every acre of ground draining into yours delivers sediment, and a pond that was eight feet deep when it was dug is often three feet deep thirty years later, which is why it grows weed and goes green in July. Dredging typically runs 6,000 to 35,000 dollars and the number turns almost entirely on one question: where does the material go. Wet dredging with a long reach machine, pulling material out and stockpiling it to dry on the bank before spreading it, is the common Indiana approach and it needs somewhere to put it. If the spoil can be spread on the property, dredging is affordable. If it has to be hauled, it is not. Worth knowing before you dredge: unless the sediment source upstream is addressed, the pond will silt in again on the same schedule it did the first time, so the grading and waterway work above the pond is part of the real fix rather than an upsell.
A pond dam is a structure that holds back a great deal of weight, and the failure modes are unforgiving. Repairs commonly run 5,000 to 30,000 dollars. The recurring problems in Indiana are trees, which is the one most owners are surprised by. A mature tree growing on a dam is not scenery, it is a future leak, because when it dies the root system rots and leaves a channel straight through the structure. Others: burrowing animals, seepage at the toe, settlement that has lowered the crest below the design freeboard, and slope failure on the water side where wave action has cut the bank. Repair work means excavating into the dam, rebuilding in compacted lifts of the right material, and reshaping the slopes so they hold seed and can be mowed. It is not fill dirt and a rake.
Access first. A pond site a scraper and a dozer can reach directly costs a fraction of one where equipment has to be walked in around buildings, fences or wet ground. Water second, because working in saturated material moves less dirt per hour and does more damage doing it. Season third, since the same job priced in a dry September and a wet April is not the same job. Spoil placement fourth, which has come up in every section above because it is the largest single variable in pond work. And finally permits: work in or near a regulated drain, a stream, a wetland or within half a mile of a public lake of ten acres or more can require approval from the county surveyor or the state, and that is a planning item rather than an obstacle when somebody accounts for it up front.
When an old pond has multiple problems at once, a silted basin, a failing spillway and a seeping dam, there is a real decision to make and the honest answer is not always repair. Fixing three failures separately on a pond that was poorly sited to begin with can approach the cost of doing it properly once. What tips the balance toward repair is a pond in a good location with one identifiable failure. What tips it toward rebuilding is a pond that has never held well, sits where water does not naturally collect, or was dug without a core trench. Usually yes, or at least well enough to quote the work. The pattern of loss tells most of the story: a pond that drops fast to a certain level and then holds is almost always losing water through a structure at that elevation, typically the overflow pipe. A pond that loses steadily all season is more likely a bottom or dam seep. Wet ground or a spring below the dam points at a specific path through the structure. In Indiana that depends on whether the pond is fed by surface runoff, by groundwater, or both, and it can be anywhere from a single wet season to two years. A pond dug down to intersect the water table starts holding immediately. A runoff pond fills on the weather's schedule, which is why most are dug in late summer and early fall so winter and spring do the work. Anyone promising a specific fill date is guessing.
Sometimes, and it is worth checking before rather than after. A pond dug in an ordinary upland field, not in a stream, not in a wetland, and not near a regulated drain, often needs nothing. A pond that touches a county regulated drain, a flowing stream, mapped wetland, or sits within half a mile of a public lake of ten acres or more can need county surveyor approval or a state permit. We look at that as part of quoting, because the honest version of this answer depends on your specific parcel and nobody should give you a blanket yes or no.
No, and it is usually worse. Frozen ground limits where machines can safely work and stockpiled spoil will not dry in the cold, which means it cannot be spread and has to sit longer or be hauled. The best window for most Indiana pond work is late summer through fall, when the water is at its low point and there is dry weather ahead for material to give up moisture on the bank.
